WOCAT methods and tools

WOCAT has developed a well-accepted framework for documentation, monitoring, evaluation and dissemination of SLM knowledge, covering all steps from data collection, to a database and to using the information for decision support. WOCAT tools provide a unique, widely accepted and standardised method of application.

WOCAT has developed several questionnaires, always in the context of the different activity levels and relevance:

  • Up-scaling and decision support are growing demands. The question of how to achieve “maximum impact” through “least effort” is constantly being asked at the local, national and at the global level.
  • Flexible tools and methods: Further development of the global and national standard tools and methods with flexible options/ alternatives is important as needs are constantly changing.
  • Network partners have been involved in formulating the needs, and in testing and developing these tools.

WOCAT methods and tools

Local level: Two comprehensive questionnaires on SLM Technologies and SLM Approaches for the documentation of practices have been developed and are constantly up-dated

  • Questionnaire on SLM Technologies (QT)
  • Questionnaire on SLM Approaches (QA)
SLM Practices: Technologies and Approaches

A SLM practice can be either an SLM Technology (a physical practice that controls land degradation and/or enhances productivity, consisting of one or several measures) or an SLM Approach (ways and means used to implement one or several SLM Technologies, including technical and material support, stakeholder engagement, and other).

National / regional level: The SLM Mapping methodology has been developed in collaboration with the LADA-project and providing a tool for assessing the spatial coverage of land degradation and conservation/ SLM.
  • Mapping Questionnaire (QM)
  • Questionnaire on Watershed Management (QW)
Land Management Mapping tools

At the landscape or watershed level, WOCAT has developed land management mapping tools including:

  • Land degradation and conservation: mapping land management, land degradation, and SLM, and assessing drivers, state of the land, and on- and off-site impacts (within a landscape, watershed, or region).
  • Watershed and runoff: mapping land management and assessing runoff and outflow from a watershed (questionnaire, mapping app, and database).

WOCAT modules

The WOCAT framework is flexible and open for additional topics on global issues such as climate change adaptation and mitigation and watershed management not covered in the standardised WOCAT questionnaires. Therefore further modules can be added according to specific interests and needs.

Modules to specific topics

The WOCAT framework is flexible and open.

Specific modules can be added to the WOCAT Core questionnaires to gain further in-depth knowledge on a particular topic, depending on the user’s interests and needs.

Currently the only module available is the Climate Change Adaptation Questionnaire (QCCA).
