SLM Videos

WOCAT is using video to transform and package documented SLM knowledge into informative and authentic audio-visual material. Videos are produced together with innovative, experienced land users who have successfully implemented a SLM practice on their farm and are willing to capture their personal story on video and share their knowledge. Three video types are produced:

  1. General SLM videos with a length of seven to ten minutes which cover a certain topic in the field of SLM and can be used e.g. in presentations, trainings or for broadcasting on TV.
  2. Instructional videos which serve as audiovisual guide for the implementation of SLM Technologies and Approaches and aim at motivating land users to replicate a practice on their land. Instructional videos are part of a larger training package including a written documentation containing further details and data.
  3. Short video clips on SLM Technologies and Approaches which comprise of short statements by land users regarding particular aspects of a SLM Technology or Approach.

Video addresses various target groups at different levels acting as intermediaries to reach the ultimate target group and beneficiaries, the land users. At field level: technical staff, extension workers, agricultural advisors, and project implementers; at (sub-) national level: planners, project designers, decision makers, and researchers; and at regional and global level: policy makers, international programme planners, donors and the broad public. Due to this versatility and the fact that they provide authentic information from the field, videos are a promising tool not only for knowledge sharing in SLM but also for extensive advocacy for SLM.

Biological Pest Control

The technology aims at biological pest control through reducing the use of common agrochemicals by supporting preferred habitats of biological pest control agents like amphibians and by using alternative self-made organic pesticides. Increasing habitat heterogeneity stimulates the diversity of amphibians and so a greater number of pest types will be controlled.

Constellation Analysis

Constellation Analysis is a tool used to clarify perceptions of different stakeholders about critical situations or problems and paves the way for better informed decision-making while facilitating a negotiated process of land management with potential changes/techniques. In workshops, participants visualize interrelationships between actors, as well as the associated natural, technical and regulatory factors.

Infilling of gullies with vegetative structures

Infilling of gullies with vegetative structures reduces erosion, slows down the water runoff and collects the sediments. Willow cuttings are planted in the gullies and branches are woven into them. These barriers, built every few meters, help to stabilize the soil and to fill up the gully.
