WOCAT (World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies) is an established global network of Soil and Water Conservation (SWC) specialists, dedicated to sustainable land management (SLM). In response to the need to formalise the previously informal global network a Framework Agreement defining the WOCAT Network as WOCAT International, and WOCAT Regional and National has been elaborated and legally safeguarded. In August 2014, the Consortium Partners officially signed the Agreement, which marks the start of a promising collaboration between the Consortium Partners and all partners of the WOCAT Network worldwide.

The overall goal of the WOCAT Network is to unite the efforts in knowledge management and decision support for up-scaling SLM among all stakeholders including national governmental and non-governmental institutions and international and regional organizations and programmes. The network provides tools that allow SLM specialists to identify fields and needs of action, share their valuable knowledge in land management, that assist them in their search for appropriate SLM technologies and approaches, and that support them in making decisions in the field and at the planning level and in up-scaling identified best practices (-> view WOCAT flyer -> view introductory presentation).

Livestock commitee at village level

The rotational grazing system has many advantages for the village and the livestock committee. The pastures improve and this helps to increase the number of animals per family. The head of the livestock committee suggests where to let the animals graze depending on the weather situation.

Rotational grazing supported by additional water points

Since the introduction of pasture management two years ago soil erosion has decreased and areas affected by past erosion processes have improved. Additionally to the rotational grazing system, water points were installed to water the animals during dry periods.

Infilling of gullies with vegetative structures

Infilling of gullies with vegetative structures reduces erosion, slows down the water runoff and collects the sediments. Willow cuttings are planted in the gullies and branches are woven into them. These barriers, built every few meters, help to stabilize the soil and to fill up the gully.

Roof top rainwater harvesting

Due to a lack of springs and nearby rivers, roof top rainwater harvesting is very important in many areas offering a simple method to collect and store water. The earth tank lined with a polyethylene sheet allows to retain thousands of liters of rainwater collected from the roof of the house and it can easily be built in two days.

Energy efficiency measures to increase the application of organic fertilizer

By building a new and more efficient stove, a lot of energy can be saved. Less dung cakes are needed for cooking and boiling water. This leads to a higher amount of organic fertilizer that can be applied on the fields.

Reduced pressure on forest resources by improved thermal insulation

Thermal insulation of private houses with energy efficient products helps to reduce the fuel-wood demand and pressures on the natural environment. With the new oven, it is possible to bake bread, boil water and cook food at the same time. The isolated windows, ceilings and doors keep the room warm even during the cold winter. Additionally, less manure is burnt in the stoves and can therefore be used as fertilizer on the arable land.

Orchard based agroforestry

This agroforestry system provides protection against strong winds, heavy rains and flooding. Soil erosion has been reduced due to improved soil cover by the inter cropping, and through leaf litter. Furthermore, about three quarters of the crop residues are left on the field as mulch and the remainder is used as fodder. Soil organic matter and soil fertility has improved.
